What is mercury switch?

A mercury switch is a type of electrical switch that uses the liquid metal mercury to make or break an electrical circuit. The switch consists of a small sealed tube containing a drop of mercury along with two or more electrical contacts. When the switch is tilted or moved, the mercury inside the tube rolls and makes contact with one or more of the electrical contacts, completing the circuit.

Mercury switches are commonly used in tilt sensors, thermostats, and other devices that require a sensitive and reliable switching mechanism. However, due to the environmental and health hazards associated with mercury, these switches are not as commonly used today as they once were. Many countries have regulations restricting the use of mercury switches and promoting alternatives that are more environmentally friendly.

It is important to handle mercury switches with care and dispose of them properly to prevent mercury contamination. If a mercury switch is broken or leaking, it should be cleaned up by a trained professional to avoid exposure to the toxic metal.
